What patients write (in Polish)

Do dr.

THE BASICS

What veneers are and what they really change

The Polish word for a veneer, “licówka”, comes from “lico” – the face – so a veneer is any restoration of the facial, that is the front, part of a tooth. It can be made directly in the surgery from composite (bonding) or from porcelain in a dental laboratory. It lets us change what shows in your smile: the colour, shape, width, length and proportions of the teeth.

A veneer does not move a tooth the way orthodontic treatment does, but with small irregularities of position – a slight rotation, unevenness, a tooth standing a little outside the line of the arch – we can correct how it reads and build a more harmonious smile line. Veneers really can change a smile – they make spectacular changes possible.

In the right cases that avoids long orthodontic treatment and gets a marked aesthetic change in far less time. It does not mean veneers replace orthodontics, though – first we assess whether the situation really qualifies for that kind of correction.

When something simpler is enough

If the only problem is the colour of your teeth, start with whitening. It is a simpler and far less expensive solution than veneers or bonding. If the result satisfies you, there is no need to do anything more.

Teeth whitening

If it is a single chipped edge or a small gap between the front teeth, bonding one or two teeth is often enough – one appointment, from 1 000 zł per tooth.

Dental bonding

And when veneers do make sense

If the problem is not only the colour but also the shape of the teeth and their uneven position, veneers let us correct all of that at once and build a smile that holds together.

We also choose porcelain veneers when you want a result that lasts and a colour that stays put. Porcelain resists staining and its surface stays smooth for years. Bonding is an excellent solution, but over time it may need polishing, refreshing or small corrections, and it usually does not last as long as porcelain veneers.

In today’s world, because of the stress that comes with it, we very often clench our teeth and grind them hard against each other – which ends in worn and chipped edges. With strong bruxism we propose veneers rather than bonding – porcelain takes clenching better than composite. After the restoration a night guard is added.

Worn teeth and chipped edges. Rebuilding the smile

For years the patient had struggled with chipped, sharp tooth edges, which became more and more bothersome over time. The gradual wear of his teeth affected not only how his smile looked but also his self-confidence. Although the cause was complex, I suggested an effective solution — porcelain veneers.

THE CHOICE

Composite veneers or porcelain

This is the question we hear most often. There is no single right answer: composite and porcelain are each good at different things, and what tips the balance depends on what matters more to you.

CompositePorcelain
Where they are madeComposite in the surgeryPorcelain in a laboratory
How many appointmentsComposite usually onePorcelain usually five
Price per toothComposite from 1 000 złPorcelain from 3 500 zł
Filing downComposite depending on the case and the condition of the teethPorcelain depending on the case and the condition of the teeth
DurabilityComposite 5–10 yearsPorcelain 10 years and more
How they ageComposite in time they go matt and stain from coffee, tea and wine; they need polishingPorcelain the colour is stable, the surface does not take up stains
If one is damagedComposite easier to damage, but failures are rare and we repair them on the spotPorcelain harder to damage; failures are very rare
Who they suitComposite a limited budget, the bite-stabilisation phase after orthodonticsPorcelain a lasting result for years with no trouble

Composite gives the result in one appointment, costs less and is easy to repair. Porcelain is a bigger investment and usually takes five appointments, but it keeps its appearance better over the years. One thing is the same for both: we do the design and the try-in in either case – so you know what result you will get before we start work. For some patients a composite restoration is a way to check how they feel in everyday life with a given shape or colour of teeth. You can always go a step further and a few years later move to porcelain veneers as the final solution, more certain of the shape or colour you chose. If, however, you want greater durability and a more stable result from the start, and budget is not a constraint, you can go for porcelain straight away. With us a composite veneer is simply bonding – the procedure itself, how it goes and the prices of each scope are described in more detail on the bonding page.

THE WORRY

Do healthy teeth have to be filed down

Almost everyone considering veneers asks this – and rightly so, because we are talking about healthy teeth. How much has to be prepared depends on several things: whether we want to change only the shape or the colour as well, how much lighter the teeth are to be, and how they sit in the arch. Sometimes they need no filing at all (non-prep). Every case needs an individual assessment.

Without filing (non-prep)

We work this way when the teeth are correctly positioned and the veneer only has to add volume – for example with worn edges or gaps between the teeth. We can also use this solution when the patient is happy with the colour of their teeth and does not want to change it.

This is not the most common scenario, though. Usually we want to change both the shape and the colour of the teeth, and the restoration has to be aesthetic and durable, without making the teeth look too thick.

Minimal preparation

When the teeth are unevenly positioned or discoloured, or when we want to change their colour and achieve a harmonious, consistent result.

In some cases, when a tooth sits far forward in the arch or is heavily discoloured, it needs more preparation. The lighter the target colour, the more room may be needed for material that covers the darker shade.

How much we prepare in your case we can only tell after the consultation and an analysis of the design. We do not promise in advance that it will be “without filing” – that depends on your teeth and the result you expect.

THE SCOPE

How many teeth veneers are placed on

We place veneers on as many teeth as show when you smile. Most often that is 8–10 upper teeth, or 8–10 upper and 8–10 lower teeth.

The number of veneers is not fixed in advance – it depends on the width of the smile, the proportions of the teeth, their position and the course of the smile line. The point is for the transition between veneered and natural teeth to be invisible, so that the whole forms a consistent, harmonious smile.

Sometimes the scope can be limited to fewer teeth. That calls for an individual assessment, though – not only of single teeth but of the whole smile, its symmetry and how the teeth sit in relation to one another when you smile.

The try-in visit is usually the moment when we make the final decision together. Seeing the smile tried on, we begin to understand which changes are needed – that is how the treatment plan is made and it becomes clear which teeth are worth changing. That is when the final number appears.

THE RESULT

Do veneers look natural

Well-made veneers should not look like “false teeth”. Their job is to recreate the natural features of your teeth, not to create perfectly identical, very white ones. What makes them look natural is above all the right proportions, shape, colour, translucency and the way the teeth reflect light.

So we do not pick one colour and an identical shape for every tooth. We look at the whole smile, the line of the teeth, the features of the face, and how the teeth look while you are talking and smiling. The aim is a result in which the veneers are part of a harmonious smile, rather than the thing that catches the eye first.

The design is assessed beforehand, at the try-in. That lets you check not only the colour but above all the shape and proportions of the teeth, and how they relate to the whole smile.

THE PRICE

What veneers cost

The price of a veneer is given per tooth, and the total cost depends on how many teeth the makeover covers. Most often that is 8–10 teeth in an arch, although we always set the scope individually to suit the smile and the result you expect.

First consultation200 zł
Smile design with a try-in1 500 zł

Porcelain veneer – one toothfrom 3 500 zł
Ten teeth – composite / porcelain11 500 / 36 500 złthe 1 500 zł smile design is included

What the price depends on

  • the material – composite or porcelain
  • how many teeth are in the scope
  • preparatory treatment, if needed – hygiene, replacing old fillings, treating decay or root canal treatment; this is an additional cost and has to come before the aesthetic treatment

before treatment begins we present the exact scope of the planned work with its costs, so that the total cost is clear from the start

HOW IT GOES

What treatment looks like appointment by appointment

The whole process usually takes five appointments. Nothing is done permanently until the try-in – first we agree together on the result you want, and only then do you decide whether to start treatment. Every appointment is led by a dentist from our team – from the consultation to the check-up.

01

Consultation, photographs and scans

about 45 minutes

We start with a conversation about what you would like to change. We carry out an examination, take photographs and a scan, and on that basis prepare an individual smile design. We prepare the design over the following two weeks.

If it is hard to say exactly what bothers you – you do not need to know. We work it out together.

02

Try-in

about 45 minutes

We physically transfer the shape designed beforehand onto your teeth, so that you can see your new smile for real — before you make the final decision about treatment. This is not a computer visualisation. You can look in the mirror, judge the shape, length, proportions and colour of the teeth, and show the result to the people close to you. In our practice you can look at the smile in several mirrors and under different lighting — natural as well as artificial. If anything needs changing, we talk it through and make the corrections. We want you to be sure, before treatment begins, that the result will match what you expect. If a second try-in a week later is needed, it is included in the price of the design.

You look at it before anything happens to your teeth.

03

Preparing the teeth

you wear temporary veneers for about two weeks

We prepare the teeth for the veneers. Old fillings are replaced with new ones, we take scans for the technician and send them to the laboratory. At the end of the appointment you receive temporary veneers in the shape and colour agreed earlier.

Don't worry – you do not leave the surgery without teeth.

04

Cementing the veneers

one appointment

We try in the finished veneers from the laboratory, check their fit and then bond them permanently to the teeth.

The result you already know from the try-in becomes permanent.

05

Check-up

1–2 weeks after cementing

We check how the veneers work and look in everyday conditions. We check the bite, the fit and the seal of the veneers, their colour in daylight and the condition of the gums.

If anything bothers you, this is the moment to say so.

THE DESIGN

See your new smile, before you say yes

You do not have to imagine anything. Before you decide to start treatment, we prepare a design of your smile and physically transfer it onto your teeth for the try-in. You can see it in your own face, look at it in the mirror, take photographs with your own phone and show the result to the people close to you. We designed our practice so that a smile can be judged in several mirrors and under different lighting — natural and artificial.

If something does not suit you, we change it at this stage. Shape, length, width or colour can all be refined before the actual treatment begins. Changing the design at this stage costs you nothing. Changing finished veneers is an altogether different matter.

The design costs 1 500 zł. It is a separate, chargeable stage of treatment, covering the work of the dentist and the technician. It is not a computer visualisation but a real try-in of the designed smile.

You pay for the design in advance, at the first appointment. If you decide on the design straight away, the first appointment including the consultation costs 1 700 zł. If you choose the consultation alone — 200 zł.

The price of the design stays the same whether or not you go ahead with the makeover after the try-in. If you choose a ten-tooth package, the design is part of its price – the 1 500 zł you paid for it counts towards the package and you pay the rest up to the package amount.

This way you decide about treatment only once you have seen and accepted the direction your future makeover will take.

DURABILITY

How long veneers last and what comes next

Composite usually 5–10 years, porcelain 10 years and more. These are indicative figures only. How long the work lasts depends on how it is used, on the bite, on clenching and grinding, and on everyday habits. With bruxism — frequent, strong clenching or grinding — the load on the material is greater, which is why properly fitted protection matters especially in such cases.

What happens after some years

Composite may go matt over time and stain at the edges. In many cases its appearance can be refreshed by polishing, which we do alongside a hygiene appointment. If the material is heavily worn or damaged, the bonding may need replacing.

Porcelain does not change colour, but the tissues around the teeth do change over time. The gum line may gradually move and a visible junction may appear at the edge of the veneer. This is a natural process that comes with time, not necessarily a fault in the work.

This ageing of the tissues is very slow and goes on throughout life, so any changes may only become noticeable after 15–20 years or even later. They do not affect the durability of the veneer itself and are not always visible in a way that matters aesthetically.

How you brush also matters a great deal. Brushing too hard can speed up gum recession. That is why, once an aesthetic restoration is done, we teach our patients how to look after the new smile properly.

We also recommend a hygiene appointment every 6 months. It lets us keep an eye on the teeth, the gums and the work itself. If a small flaw appears, we can act early and often repair it easily, before it turns into a bigger problem.

What if a veneer comes off or cracks

If a porcelain veneer comes off but stays intact, it can usually be cemented back on. So if that happens to you — do not throw it away, bring it with you to the appointment.

If a veneer chips, in many cases we can repair it with composite, without having to make a new one. If the damage does call for a new veneer, you pay for that one veneer, not for the whole course of treatment.

With composite veneers we can repair most minor damage in the surgery itself, during a single appointment.

The guarantee

On porcelain veneers we give 2 years of repair cover, on composite ones 12 months. If the work chips or cracks within that time, we repair it free of charge, provided the advice on hygiene and on protecting the teeth has been followed.

The basis for this is a hygiene appointment every 6 months. It lets us keep an eye on the teeth, the gums and the work itself, and act early if a problem appears.

The cover does not extend to staining caused by diet or smoking, or to damage related to bruxism where the recommended night guard is not worn.

Beyond the cover period the rules are simple: a check-up and hygiene appointment every six months and, if you grind or clench, a properly fitted night guard. After orthodontic treatment, wearing retainers correctly and attending regular check-ups with the orthodontist also matter.

We do not promise that nothing will change over the years. We say plainly how our work behaves over time, what can happen and what the options for repair are. Thanks to regular check-ups we can often act before a small problem becomes a larger one.

FAQ — Frequently Asked Questions

The most common questions

What do veneers cost?

A composite veneer costs from 1 000 zł per tooth, a porcelain one from 3 500 zł per tooth. We most often do them across 8–10 teeth. You will find the full price list above. The consultation and the smile design come on top of the cost of treatment – unless you choose a ten-tooth package, whose price already includes the design.

Go to the veneer price list
How many teeth are veneers placed on?

Most often on 8–10 teeth, which is about as many as usually show when you smile. A smaller scope makes sense if the colour of the remaining teeth matches the veneers — otherwise the border between them may be visible.

Will veneers straighten crooked teeth?

A veneer does not move a tooth — it changes its shape and the way it looks from the side that shows when you smile. With slight rotation or unevenness it can even out a smile optically. With larger bite problems, or teeth set well outside the arch, orthodontic treatment may be needed first.

Is other treatment needed before veneers?

In selected cases, yes. Decay has to be treated first, and sometimes root canal treatment or other necessary dental work is required. At the consultation we assess what your teeth need and prepare a plan covering the scope, the cost and the expected duration of treatment. Basic treatment is charged separately and has to be done before aesthetic treatment.

Do veneers ruin your teeth?

Not every veneer requires filing. Whether a tooth has to be prepared, and to what extent, is something we decide at the consultation, based on the design and the planned result. Removing enamel is irreversible, so we only do it where it is genuinely needed. In many cases we can place veneers with minimal preparation or none at all.

Does having veneers fitted hurt?

With veneers placed without preparation, anaesthetic is usually not needed. Where the teeth do have to be prepared, we work under local anaesthetic. For a few days after the appointment the teeth may be more sensitive to cold. Anaesthetic is included in the price of the procedure.

How long does the whole treatment take?

The whole way to a new smile usually takes 3–6 weeks. Preparing the design takes about two weeks. The try-in follows, and the veneers themselves are usually placed in one appointment for composite and two for porcelain: preparing the teeth and fitting the finished veneers.

Do veneers stain from coffee and wine?

Composite may stain over time, but its colour can often be refreshed by polishing. Porcelain does not absorb pigments, so it keeps its colour. Your own tooth at the edge of the veneer may stain, however.

Are veneers covered by the national health service?

No. Veneers are an aesthetic dental procedure and are not reimbursed by the NFZ.

What if a veneer comes off or cracks?

If a porcelain veneer comes off and stays intact, it can usually be cemented back on — so do not throw it away, bring it to the appointment. If a veneer cracks and a new one has to be made, you pay for that one veneer, not for the whole course of treatment. Composite veneers can in many cases be repaired on the spot.
