root canal treatment

54 Bokserska St, unit U1, 02-690 Warsaw, Mokotów

Root canal treatment lets us save your own tooth when its inside has been affected by inflammation or infection. We carry it out under local anaesthetic and under the magnification of a microscope. After cleaning the canals we rebuild the tooth properly so that it can keep working normally. Most often the treatment can be done in a single visit. We tell you how it will go in your case before treatment starts.

What patients write (in Polish)

Do dr.

WHEN IT IS NEEDED

How do you know that root canal treatment is needed

Not every toothache means root canal treatment. First we examine the tooth and carry out the right diagnostics to find the cause of the problem.

The tooth hurts for a long time after cold or heat

If pain after a cold or hot drink does not go away at once, appears on its own or wakes you at night, it may mean inflammation of the pulp.

It hurts when you bite

Pain when biting may point to inflammation of the tissues around the root. We then check the tooth clinically and on an X-ray.

The tooth has changed colour

A darker tooth may mean its pulp has died. Importantly, such a tooth does not always hurt – so pain alone is not the only sign.

What do a "dead tooth" or "root canal" mean

These are words patients often use. During root canal treatment we remove the diseased pulp, clean the inside of the tooth and seal its canals tightly.

We do not "kill the nerve" with a paste – that belongs to older methods of treatment we no longer use.

MICROSCOPE

Why we treat canals under a microscope

The canals of a tooth are very small and do not always run straight. They can be narrow, curved or follow an unusual course.

That is why we work under the magnification of a surgical microscope. It lets the dentist see the inside of the tooth more precisely, find the canals and shape and fill them more accurately.

The microscope does not replace diagnostics, but it gives us much better visibility during the treatment itself.

THE PROCESS

What root canal treatment looks like

Most often we complete the whole treatment in a single visit. In more complex cases a second one may be needed. We always explain beforehand what to expect.

01

First we check what is happening with the tooth

We talk about the symptoms, examine the tooth and take an X-ray. If the situation is more complex, we may recommend a 3D CT scan.

02

We discuss the plan

We explain what we want to do, how long treatment will take and how we will rebuild the tooth afterwards. You also learn the expected cost in advance.

03

We clean the canals

We give a local anaesthetic, open the tooth and remove the diseased pulp. Then we carefully clean and shape the canals, working under the magnification of a microscope.

04

We seal the canals tightly

After cleaning we fill the canals with a material that protects them from reinfection. When treatment is finished we take a check X-ray.

05

We rebuild the tooth

Root canal treatment is not the end. The tooth still has to be rebuilt properly. Depending on how much of its own tissue is left, a filling may be enough, or a glass-fibre post or a crown may be needed.

HOW IT FEELS

Does root canal treatment hurt

We carry out treatment under local anaesthetic, so the procedure itself should not be painful.

After treatment the tooth may be more sensitive for a few days, especially when biting. This is more likely if there was inflammation around the tooth before treatment.

If after a few days the pain does not start to ease or clearly gets worse, contact us. We will check what is going on.

The local anaesthetic is included in the price of root canal treatment.

RESTORATION

What happens to the tooth after root canal treatment

After root canal treatment the tooth needs a proper restoration. That does not mean every tooth has to be crowned straight away.

How we choose the restoration

We look at how much of the tooth is left, where it sits and how much load it will carry when you bite.

Composite filling – from 450 zł

If the tooth is well enough preserved, we can rebuild it with a classic composite filling.

Tooth restoration with a glass-fibre post – from 800 zł

If the tooth needs extra strengthening, we can restore it with a glass-fibre post, which strengthens a weakened tooth.

Crown – 3 500 zł

If the tooth is badly damaged and needs fuller protection, a crown may be the best solution.

We do not suggest a crown just because a tooth has had root canal treatment. We choose the restoration for its actual condition.

What if the tooth is dark after root canal treatment

Teeth after root canal treatment can change colour over time. Whitening them is less predictable, so with persistent discolouration we may consider bonding or a veneer – depending on how the tooth looks and how much of its own tissue it has kept.

TREAT OR REMOVE

Treat the tooth or remove it

If the tooth has a good outlook, it is worth treating and keeping. Your own tooth is usually the best long-term solution – so if we have a real chance of treating and rebuilding it successfully, we try to keep it first.

We assess, among other things, the condition of the root, how much tissue, bone and gum is left and whether a tight, lasting restoration is possible.

If, however, the tooth is badly damaged, has a cracked root or its outlook is poor or uncertain, further treatment may not be the best solution. In that situation it is worth considering straight away removing the tooth and replacing it with an implant and a crown or with a bridge.

The point is not to treat a tooth at any cost if the chance of keeping it long term is small. We decide on the basis of an examination and diagnostics, assessing not only whether the tooth can be treated today but also its outlook for the coming years.

At allsmiles root canal treatment is carried out by Mikołaj Kisiel, DDS, and Jacek Wild, DDS, and implant treatment by Daniel Domański, DDS, MSc. This lets us look at the situation from both sides and discuss the options before you decide.

RETREATMENT

What if the tooth has already had root canal treatment

Sometimes a tooth that had root canal treatment starts to hurt again after a few years, or inflammation shows up on an X-ray.

This does not always mean the tooth has to come out. In some cases root canal retreatment is possible, but it is more complex and the chances of a predictable result are usually lower than with a first treatment.

The cause may be, for example, a missed canal, an earlier treatment that was not tight, reinfection or changes that could not be treated properly before.

Retreatment often means removing the earlier materials, and sometimes a post or a crown as well. That is why we carefully assess the tooth and its outlook before deciding.

Root canal retreatment – from 1 200 zł (one canal), from 1 500 zł (two), from 1 700 zł (three), from 1 900 zł (four or more).

If the tooth has a good outlook, it is worth trying to keep it. If, however, the chances of successful treatment are small or uncertain, it is worth considering straight away removing the tooth and replacing it with an implant and a crown or with a bridge.

PRICES

How much does root canal treatment cost

The price of root canal treatment depends above all on the number of canals in the tooth. Root canal treatment itself is only part of the process, though – after the canals are cleaned and filled, the tooth still has to be rebuilt properly.

That is why the total cost of treating a tooth is the root canal treatment plus its restoration: a filling, a restoration with a glass-fibre post or a crown – depending on how much of the tooth is left and what protection it needs.

For example: if the tooth has one canal and can be rebuilt with an ordinary filling afterwards, the total cost starts from 1 450 zł. With a restoration with a glass-fibre post it is from 1 800 zł, and if the tooth needs a crown – 4 500 zł.

Before treatment starts we explain what restoration the tooth needs and what the expected total cost will be. This way you know not only what root canal treatment costs but what it will cost to see the tooth through to the end.

HOW LONG IT LASTS

How long the tooth will last after treatment

A well-treated and properly rebuilt tooth can last many years, and in favourable conditions even a lifetime. No single lifespan fits every patient, though.

A lot depends on how much of the tooth was kept, how it was rebuilt, how much load it carries when you bite and what your daily hygiene is like. It also matters that the tooth stays tight and symptom-free after treatment.

We judge the success of treatment not only by whether the tooth stopped hurting. The X-ray picture and the absence of symptoms over time count too.

After treatment we take a check X-ray, and then, as follow-up, we recommend a CBCT scan after about a year and after 5 years. This lets us assess both the tooth and the tissues around its root.

No symptoms, a normal X-ray picture and a stable tooth over time let us consider the treatment successful.

FAQ – Frequently Asked Questions

The most common questions

Does root canal treatment hurt?

No. We carry out treatment under local anaesthetic, so you should not feel it during the procedure. After the visit, especially the same day or the next, the treated tooth may feel a little "different" – you may feel it more deeply or have the impression that something has been going on in it. Most often there are no such sensations at all, but if they appear they usually pass within 2–3 days. If any discomfort lasts longer than 7 days, please contact us so we can check what is going on. The local anaesthetic is included in the price of root canal treatment.

How many visits does root canal treatment take?

Most often one visit is enough. In more complex cases treatment may need a second.

How much does root canal treatment cost?

The price depends on the number of canals in the tooth: 1 canal – from 1 000 zł, 2 canals – from 1 200 zł, 3 canals – from 1 500 zł, 4 or more – from 1 700 zł. The anaesthetic is included. Remember that this is the price of the root canal treatment alone. The restoration has to be added to the total cost – a filling from 450 zł, a restoration with a glass-fibre post from 800 zł or a crown for 3 500 zł, depending on what the tooth needs.

Does every tooth need a crown after root canal treatment?

Not always. Sometimes a filling is enough, sometimes a glass-fibre post is needed, and with a badly damaged tooth – a crown.

Which is better: root canal treatment or an extraction?

If the tooth has a good outlook, we try to keep it first. Your own tooth is usually the best solution in the long run. First we assess whether root canal treatment gives a real chance of a lasting result. We consider removing the tooth and replacing it with an implant and a crown or with a bridge when the outlook is poor or uncertain, for example with a cracked root or a very badly damaged tooth.

Can a tooth turn dark after root canal treatment?

Yes, a tooth can change colour and darken over time after root canal treatment. With the methods used in the past this happened much more often. Today, with properly performed treatment, it usually does not happen. If the tooth does change colour over time, an aesthetic restoration with bonding, a veneer or a crown can be considered – depending on how much of the tooth is left and how large the colour change is.

Can a tooth that already had root canal treatment be saved?

Often yes. If the tooth has a good outlook, we can carry out root canal retreatment. We decide after an examination and diagnostics.

What if root canal treatment does not succeed?

In selected cases an apicoectomy (root-end resection) is possible. If the tooth cannot be kept, we discuss removing it and replacing it with an implant or a bridge.

Do you carry out root canal treatment under a microscope?

Yes. We work under the magnification of a microscope, which makes it easier to find and shape the canals, especially in harder cases.

Do you take an X-ray after treatment?

Yes. When treatment is finished we take a check single-tooth X-ray to assess how the canals were filled.

Do you do root canal treatment under the NFZ?

Not at our practice. Treatment is paid privately, as the practice has no contract with the National Health Fund.
