WHY

Why have a hygiene appointment

Daily brushing and cleaning between the teeth are the basis of hygiene, but they do not remove everything. Over time plaque can harden into tartar, which cannot be removed with a toothbrush or floss.

Healthy gums

Tartar and plaque building up at the gums encourage inflammation. One of the first signs can be bleeding when you brush. Regular cleaning helps keep the gums in good condition and lowers the risk of gum disease.

Fewer stains and less discolouration

Coffee, tea, wine or cigarettes can leave stains and surface discolouration on the teeth. Air polishing helps remove them and bring back the natural colour of the teeth. It is not whitening, though – it does not change the natural colour of a tooth.

Smooth tooth surfaces

After cleaning and polishing the surface of the teeth becomes smoother, so new deposits build up on it less easily.

Fresher breath

Tartar and stains can contribute to bad breath. Removing them, together with good home care, can noticeably freshen your breath.

A check of the mouth

A hygiene appointment is also a good moment to take a closer look at the teeth, gums and earlier dental work. The hygienist checks the condition and seal of fillings, retainers, bonding and veneers. If she notices something that needs a dentist’s check, she will tell you and help you plan the next visit.

Making treatment last longer

Regular hygiene appointments help keep bonding, veneers, implants, fillings and other restorations in good condition. We can also keep an eye on their condition and, with bonding and veneers, polish them as needed to refresh their surface.

WHAT IT INCLUDES

What a hygiene appointment includes

The visit has several stages. Their extent can be adjusted to the amount of tartar, the type of stains and the condition of your teeth and gums.

Scaling

We remove tartar, the hard deposit that cannot be removed with a toothbrush. We also clean the areas at the gums and between the teeth.

Air polishing

We remove stains and surface discolouration, for example from coffee, tea, wine or cigarettes. We choose the powder for the condition of your teeth and gums.

Polishing

We smooth the surface of the teeth after cleaning, so it is less prone to plaque building up again.

Fluoride

Finally we apply a fluoride preparation, which supports enamel remineralisation and protects the teeth against decay.

Home-care advice

The hygienist points out where your daily hygiene may need improving. If needed, she shows you how to brush and what to clean between your teeth with.

THE PROCESS

What the visit looks like

A hygiene appointment takes about an hour. No special preparation is needed. If you have not had time to brush before the visit, you can do it here too – disposable toothbrushes and toothpaste are waiting in the patients’ bathroom.

01

Assessing teeth and gums

The hygienist assesses the amount of tartar and stains and the condition of the gums. She also checks fillings, retainers, bonding and veneers. If she notices something that needs a dentist’s opinion, she will tell you.

02

Scaling

We remove tartar, including at the gums and between the teeth.

03

Air polishing

We remove stains and surface discolouration.

04

Polishing and fluoride

We smooth the surface of the teeth and apply a fluoride preparation.

05

Advice and the next visit

We talk about home care and what to pay attention to. We usually book the next hygiene appointment for about six months later, and send a text message reminder before the date, so regular check-ups and cleaning are easier to remember.

HOW IT FEELS

Does a hygiene appointment hurt

How it feels depends mainly on the condition of your gums, the amount of tartar and how sensitive your teeth are.

With healthy gums the procedure is usually well tolerated. If there is inflammation, the gums may bleed during cleaning, and with exposed tooth necks the teeth may be more sensitive.

If you have sensitive teeth or are anxious about the procedure, tell the hygienist before the visit starts. We can adjust the way and pace of work, and with greater sensitivity use a local anaesthetic.

HOW OFTEN

How often to have a hygiene appointment

We most often recommend a hygiene appointment every 6–12 months. We set the exact interval individually, depending on how much tartar builds up, the condition of your gums and your daily hygiene.

People who tend to build up more tartar or have gum problems may need visits more often.

After bonding and veneers we recommend regular check-ups and hygiene appointments, usually about every six months. This lets us monitor the teeth, gums and the work done, and polish and refresh it as we go.

HYGIENE AND OTHER TREATMENT

Hygiene before and after treatment

Professional cleaning is often the first stage of treatment, and afterwards it helps keep the result.

Before whitening

First we remove tartar and stains, and only then whiten the natural teeth. This way the tooth surface is clean and the whitening result more predictable.

With bonding and veneers

During a hygiene appointment we can also polish bonded surfaces and remove stains that may build up on restorations over time. Regular check-ups also help assess the condition of veneers and bonding.

With implants

Hygiene around implants matters especially. During the visit we choose the cleaning method for the type of restoration and check the area around the implants.

With braces

Brackets and other parts of braces make thorough cleaning harder, so professional hygiene appointments may be needed more often during orthodontic treatment.

The price of a standard hygiene appointment stays the same – 400 zł.

FAQ – Frequently Asked Questions

The most common questions

Why have a hygiene appointment if I brush my teeth every day?

Brushing and cleaning between the teeth remove plaque, but they do not always reach every spot. Over time plaque can turn into tartar, which cannot be removed at home. A hygiene appointment complements daily care.

How much does a hygiene appointment cost?

A full hygiene appointment – scaling, air polishing, polishing and fluoride – costs 400 zł.

How long does a hygiene appointment take?

The visit takes about an hour.

Can I have a hygiene appointment while pregnant?

Yes. A hygiene appointment is possible during pregnancy. With greater sensitivity or special recommendations it is worth telling us about the pregnancy before the visit, so we can adjust it. The second trimester is the best time for it.

Does a hygiene appointment hurt?

It depends on the condition of your gums and how sensitive your teeth are. With greater sensitivity we can adjust the way we work and, if needed, use a local anaesthetic.

Does air polishing damage enamel?

Properly performed air polishing is used to remove stains and surface discolouration. We choose the powder for the condition of your teeth and gums, so the procedure suits the individual patient.

Does a hygiene appointment whiten teeth?

No. A hygiene appointment does not change the natural colour of your teeth. It does remove stains and surface discolouration, so the teeth can look lighter and return to their natural colour. To lighten the colour of your teeth, whitening is needed.

Is a hygiene appointment the same as air polishing?

No. Air polishing is one stage of a hygiene appointment. A full hygiene appointment includes scaling, air polishing, polishing and fluoride.

How often should I have a hygiene appointment?

Most often every 6–12 months. We set the exact interval based on the condition of your teeth and gums and how quickly tartar builds up.

Can I have a hygiene appointment with implants or braces?

Yes. In both cases regular hygiene appointments matter especially. We adjust the cleaning method to the type of implant, prosthetic restoration or braces.

Who does the hygiene appointment?

Our qualified dental hygienists. If something comes up during the visit that needs a dentist’s opinion, the hygienist will tell you and help you plan a consultation.

Do you remind patients about the next appointment?

Yes. We can remind you of the upcoming date by phone or text message.

Do you treat NFZ (public health fund) patients?

No. The practice is private only. You will find the prices of all treatments in the price list.
